Town of Spindale – Planning and Zoning Administrator

The Town of Spindale, (population 4,193) located in the foothills of NC, is seeking applicants for the position of Planning and Zoning Administrator. The Spindale Planning and Zoning Administrator position represents an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team in a town that is experiencing an exciting revitalization of its downtown, along with substantial residential growth. Spindale is also the hub of the Thermal Belt Rail Trail, an amazing greenway stretching 13.5 miles through the heart of Rutherford County.

The Planning and Zoning Administrator is responsible for maintaining and administering the town’s zoning and subdivision ordinances, issuing zoning permits, coordinating special use permits, variance requests, rezoning applications, text amendments and meeting with property owners, and conducting code enforcement activities. The ideal candidate will possess effective communication and people skills and be able to manage interactions with staff, residents and developers with considerable tact and professionalism.

Staff liaison to the Planning Board, Board of Adjustment, and related advisory boards; advertises meetings; develops agenda materials and keeps minutes; follows up on decisions or questions. The Planner will also serve on a variety of other local boards and steering committees. The Planning and Zoning Administrator reports directly to the Town Manager. The successful candidate will possess a degree in planning, political science, or a similarly related field and have at least three years of experience working in local government, or a similar combination of skills and experience. Experience with GIS, grant writing and/or transportation planning preferred.

The hiring range will be $49,487 to $61,859, and the starting salary for this position will be commensurate with the candidate’s background, education, and experience.
